It's an interesting choice of name considering what the name/word means. I suppose it's like other Pratchett (and I do suspect Terry named her) characters with names that sound sort of nice as long as you don't know what they mean - Bestiality Carter, I'm looking at you!

On the other hand, there is the tendency to shorten anything for convenience, so Thou-Shalt-Not-Commit-Adultery Pulsifer was called, behind his back anyway, Adultery Pulsifer. Maybe there was a similar situation with the Carter family.

I remember Charlene telling me about the 17th Century preacher who was christened: Unless-Jesus-Christ-Had-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned Barebone. This was shortened to Praise-God Barebone.

Yep! He is best known for giving his name to Barebone's Parliament of the English Commonwealth of 1653. His eldest son, Nicholas Barbon, was a physician and financial speculator. He also helped to pioneer fire insurance after the Great Fire of 1666. (Inn-sewer-ants, anyone?) ;)

At any rate, religious "slogan names" were often given in Puritan families in the 1600s. (See "Potty, Fartwell and Knob: Extraordinary but True Names of British People" by Russell Ash, 2008). ;)

I guess he should be grateful. At least he wasn't called Commit-Adultery Pulsifer. (Similar to the Wicked Bible of 1631). ;)

Pulsifer is a pune. The name Lucifer translates as Bringer of Light. That makes Pulsifer, Bringer of Peas (Peace) and yes, I know peas are legumes rather than pulses, but you get your punes where you can and the dodgier the better.

Feegled Steve's from C.A forum, the P.O.A for the Celestial edition is a bit eye watering given that it's limited to 24 copies I wonder how many will be sold.

Thank you for registering your interest in the Celestial edition of the Illustrated Good Omens, published by Dunmanifestin
This rare presentation copy is a serious investment for the book and art collector. The craftmanship in this edition elevates every tome to a printed masterpiece. Each copy is individually printed and hand bound by artisans in the UK. The leather-cased hardback features bespoke metal corner pieces, hand-marbled endpapers and gold foiled page edges. Dedicated signature pages, signed by Terry Pratchett’s co-author Neil Gaiman and artist Paul Kidby, correspond to the twenty-four letters of the Greek alphabet. The book contains 20 colour illustrations, and further pencil art and graphics, printed using state of the art printing and foiling techniques. The volume is presented in a tailor-made burr oak box, with winged hourglass metal inlays, and an inset brass disc inscribed with the Greek character unique to each copy. Inside, a secret compartment reveals further Good Omens bounty: an envelope of fourteen items of ephemera including maps, prophecy cards and unique art prints. Also contained within the box is a hardbound copy of never-before-published William the Antichrist, the very first inception of the Good Omens story written by Neil Gaiman over thirty years ago.

Overall we believe we have created a truly Celestial edition.

Price including UK delivery by specialist art couriers is £6,666 per copy.
I was hoping the price would be closer to £666. Too hot for me.

Checking various sources, i see that the BBC showing of the series has led more people to discover the book, and through that gateway, some are even going on to discover the Discworld.

Sir Terry, Neil Gaiman, and Diana Wynne Jones were good friends.

A line from Power of Three (1976) by Diana Wynne Jones:
"A curse obeys the same laws as everything else. It contains the seeds of its own decay."

Good Omens (1990):
"You see, evil always contains the seeds of its own destruction. It is ultimately negative, and therefore encompasses its downfall even at its moments of apparent triumph."
