Khan, Joshua: Shadow Magic (2016) - MG-YA
This is the first of a trilogy but works as a standalone, fortunately, as I got it secondhand without the other two. (They are 2.Dream Magic 3.Burning Magic)
The structure is pretty standard, young hero, poor, searching for father who is on the run, meets magical people, seems to succeed by sheer stubbornness and having been taught survival skills by his father. Strong, brave, clever princess, etc. The plot is a bit more convoluted than I expected, with some unexpected twists right up to the end, and it is a lively page-turner. A good solid kid's book, somewhere between MG and YA. If I find the other two, I will probably buy them.
