Bought second-hand. YA to adult. It's a riff on just about every classic fairy tale and fantasy trope, twisted into a marvelously complex story of intertwining motivations. Everyone has a reason for what they are doing, and we find out by the use of a shifting first-person point of view. Since most people don't start off thinking "I'm soandso", you have to figure out whose head you are eavesdropping on every time the POV changes.
I think the setting is primarily Lithuanian peasant with a strong Judaic element, but not restricted to that social group. No cliche left unturned. Excellent book.
