Whoops! I thought this was the Maskerade thread. *blush* Obviously I need more coffee -- in my defence I can only claim that I hadn't had any coffee for three days (or should that be "Tree Dace")? ;)

Wyrd Sisters is a very fine book. Yes, it's not Granny's first appearance, but in Equal Rites she was The Mentor to Esk. It's also fairly obvious that she needed another character to bounce off, which is where Nanny comes in. :)

Again, in WS, Nanny helps Granny in her own way (as she does in Maskerade). If it wasn't for Greebo, Nanny
wouldn't be locked up in Felmet's dungeon, and Granny wouldn't come looking for her. In turn, this sets up the climactic "fly around the kingdom"
scene, and so on. :)

Nanny also lends a hand in the
demon-summoning scene
, among others. And Magrat also does her part! ;) This is the first book that sets up the Magrat-Verence dynamic.

While I did enjoy WS, I read it after I had read Carpe Jugulum (wasn't going in order back then), so the Granny, Nanny and Margrat of WS were a little less compelling to me. It definitely helps to follow the order.

One issue with the speed at which the books came out is that sometimes copyediting was let slide. There are a couple of oddities in Equal Rites that prove it was revised a bit hastily. Wyrd Sisters has fewer - I can only remember the Greebo's-eyes issue, really.
