    Murderbot TV show optioned

I am perturbed. I would guess that most of us remember when The Colour of Magic was made into a show because a rich older man paid for it so he could play Rincewind despite being forty years too old for the role. Another more horrible example is A Wizard of Earthsea. Ursula LeGuin wrote a book...

A Stroke of the Pen by Terry Pratchett review - By the GUARDIAN.

...sends the none-too-bright warrior Kron on the titular quest. It rattles along, and is liable to remind the Pratchett fan of The Colour of Magic. But it only confirms what the collection as a whole says: that this is a writer on his way somewhere more interesting. In a well-judged...

How did you "get into" Discworld?

On a trip to London, in that huge Waterstones (think it's still there) - I found the "sci f and fantasy" section, tried a Michael Moorcock and didn't like it; but there was The Colour of Magic! I did not want to put that book back on the shelf :)

How did you "get into" Discworld?

My brother bought a copy of the paperback of The Colour of Magic, when it first came out, and loaned it to me. I was hooked from then on.

How did you "get into" Discworld?

...was back in the eighties, around the time 'Equal Rites' was published, and a work colleague recommended the DW books. I started with 'Colour of Magic' and loved the way Terry lampooned my favourite authors, along with the fantasy genre in general, without being offensive to them. It helped...

How did you "get into" Discworld?

I was 12, and a friend loaned me a copy of The Colour of Magic and said "here, I think you'll like this". He wasn't wrong. I then borrowed the remaining books up to that point (probably the first 8 or so) from him and devoured them, and then started buying my own copies when I could afford it...

How did you "get into" Discworld?

...intrigued to want to know more. Especially after the cliff-hanger ending. So, I tried other books - I think "The Colour of Magic" was my second book, "Guards! Guards!" was the third. After that, I actively hunted through second-hand bookshops (and eventually new bookshops too) for...

    Maurice in 2023

The Colour of Magic is the weakest of the 3 Sky telemovies - and it's the only one I didn't buy on DVD. I think David Jason was woefully miscast as Rincewind (he was a decent Albert, however), but I can understand why they did it from a "star name" point of view. Some of the performances were...

    Coronavirus Book-Reading Blog

I agree, and I did my best to undo the damage. I gave my niece my copy of The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Equal Rites, and Mort. Er, yes? ;) Maybe it's a generational thing. I'm used to the term "munchkin" for an overpowered player - e.g. someone playing a Level 1 Fighter in D&D, but...

    The Luggage's Origins...

...the sheer schmuck bait schadenfreude value? Especially after the sheer, apocalyptic amount of magic thrown at it in the finale of The Colour of Magic? 2. Loyalty aside, I think the Luggage would count as Chaotic Neutral. Or maybe, to take a leaf out of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands' marketing...

    The Luggage's Origins...

...than it really should be. And considering Terry Pratchett puts a lot of Dungeons and Dragons tropes and creatures into The Colour of Magic, especially with the tabletop RPG the gods are playing with the mortals of the Discworld, well, who's to say the Luggage wasn't inspired by a Mimic? So...

hahaha I'd love to see all of this :roflmao: I actually reread "The colour of magic" a few weeks ago and I didn't remember a thing about Wyrmberg! SPOILERS The Colour of Magic Discussion *Spoilers*

I recently explained the plot of Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic to a friend and he replied "This sounds like a D&D campaign" and I will never look at the wonderful chaos of those two books the same. It really IS like a D&D campaign and Rincewind has terrible stats but keeps rolling natural...

...that passage! I guess, though, that we still have to intuit Tonyblack's idea that Granny W used magic on the water.... Wow, Tonyblack, 5 times... I can totally understand why. I took notes the second time I read the Colour of Magic many years ago.. these books are jewels to be read & re-read:)
