    Mark Reads Discworld

*L* Anyone who earns the praise of both Lord Vetinari and Lady Margolotta is a very special person, indeed. :) I don't hate sport (I just don't have much time for it), but I agree. There are many themes in UA, but the one that struck me and stuck with me was Nutt and his redemption. "I have...

    I Wonder what.....

I could totally see Pterry writing a DW book on a similar topic. It'd be another "conspiracy" book with the aristocratic, bigoted reactionaries (maybe led by Lord De Worde and the Lavishes) conspiring with the down-under dwarfs to create fake international incidents to break all of treaties...

What characters would you like to walk among us?

Uh ... I'm sorry if this is obvious, but I think Vetinari's patricianship is designed for running a city-state like Ankh-Morpork, not a whole country. Incidentally - and to change the subject completely (yes, I'm good at that - sorry)... here's a question about patricians. It's pretty obvious...

    SPOILERS Fred and Nobby **Spoilers**

Tamar, was that in "Guards! Guards!"? The million-to-one thing? Carrot and Nobby try to make the odds exactly a million-to-one, and at one point they stuff a handkerchief into Fred's mouth. He spits it out when they realise that it's not exactly a million-to-one. I'm afraid my reply will be...

Dash it! Always too late! Lord Vetinari, no argument!

    The Discworld Word Game

Lord Vetinari => Iambic Pentameter *grin* (Oh, all right. I just like iambic pentameter because - well - how often can you slip that one into conversation and have people know what you're talking about?) :-) So... Lord Vetinari => Inne Juste 7 Dayes I wille make you a Barbearian Hero!, by...

    Terry Pratchett's Discworld Imaginarium

...is Dr Whiteface of the Fools' Guild, obviously. ;-) One last thing, by the way (and this is amusing)... I looked up L-space on google, and 4 of the first 5 results were websites for some company who make one-piece bathing suits and bikinis. Uhm, what? *raises eyebrow, a la Lord Vetinari* ;-)

    Terry Pratchett's Discworld Imaginarium

    Hmm, just wondering...

*LOL* I just had a very silly "Freudian slip" moment there. I thought you were saying that Ridcully used his crossbow to shoot an elf or two in the rumpus. *blush* That would certainly have made them into... ahem... bottom-dwellers. *BWG* Um, the last time that the Patrician was turned into a...

    Hmm, just wondering...

...in the rumpus (although he might have shot one of two with a crossbow? I can't quite remember). Ridcully may dominate his fellow wizards, but he's certainly scared of Lord Vetinari. You wonder why he would be when, theoretically, he could turn the Patrician into a toad anytime he wanted to.

    Hmm, just wondering...

...that quite a lot of Sir Terry's toughest characters are also some of the oldest? ;) Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Cohen the Barbarian, Lord Vetinari, Vena the Raven-Haired, the Silver Horde... and DEATH... ;-) Don't you dare mess with the old folks. =P Anyway, nothing serious... just an...

    SPOILERS Night Watch Discussion *spoilers*

I've been on a Terry kick lately... finished re-reading "The Wee Free Men", "Jingo", "Going Postal" and now "Night Watch". Awesome! Here are some of my thoughts... Moments of Brilliance * There is lot of play around visibility and invisibility in Vetinari's storyline (and in the novel in...

    SPOILERS Jingo Discussion *spoilers*

...Thieves' Guild. "Because they are showing a brisk pioneering spirit and seeking wealth and... additional wealth in a new land," said Lord Vetinari. "What's in it for the Klatchians?" said Lord Downey. "Oh, they've gone out there because they are a bunch of unprincipled opportunists...

    Raising Steam

...only thing that links them is that both the Indians and the grags were afraid for their way of life, that's all. I'm also not equating Lord Vetinari with the US governments or with the bosses of the Union Pacific. I think that American history in the mid-to-late-19th-century is one long...

    SPOILERS Going Postal Discussion *Spoilers*

...shame, really; he was such an unthinking minion, and yet if he'd had a good boss to be loyal to, he'd have been an exemplary employee. Lord Vetinari could have found a place for him, I'm sure. Well, she's healthy, intelligent, active, and pleasant, and she does well in school. I guess I...

    SPOILERS Going Postal Discussion *Spoilers*

*puts on his Necromancer's Robe and wields his Staff of Resurrection* ;) In this thread, I accidentally-on-purpose digressed into discussing the "South Seas Bubble" - a financial scandal that hit London nearly 400 years ago. I summarised it in about 4-5 paragraphs. The more I read and wrote...

    Terry on the Radio

...of Mort. I think he's an excellent Vimes. His world-weary and slightly sarcastic voice is perfect for Vimes. :) What about Carcer and Lord Vetinari? I thought Carcer was pretty much spot on. Not so sure about Vetinari, but he plays a marginal (though crucial) part here. I also thought they...

STICKY Sad News for us all.

...Still Rock 'N Roll to Me, where the City Watch decide to jump on the Music with Rocks In bandwagon - and Lord Rust pens a protest to Lord Vetinari about employing Detritus, which becomes the song. ;) I wanted to give it to Terry, but was (perhaps?) afraid of doing so. A pity. I consider it...
