I wonder whether Gaiman will manage to avoid the trap of the Standard Series Plotlines. You know the patterns: no matter how you get to the parallel world, certain things always happen. Somebody will get roped into something military and have to deal with Training and will Become Adult and Gain the Respect of the Sergeant. Someone will fall in love with the enemy and have to decide whether they can Trust Them With The Truth, only to have to break up either way (because the group has to go on to the next adventure). Someone will be arrested and have to be Rescued in a Daring Jailbreak. Someone younger will either lose a pet, gain a pet, or think something intelligent is a pet and find out they were wrong, and will Learn Caution; they may also have to pick pockets or steal food. The alternate world cultures will be recognizably Victorian, Edwardian, or Pirates. Since the BBC is likely to be involved, at some point there will be Peasants Wearing Brown Rags, and something will Ooze Green Bubbles. Things will get riskier as they go along, and grimmer in every episode. At least once everybody they meet will die by the end of the episode. TV tropes will add a reference to almost all of their sections.

Or maybe Gaiman will actually manage to force them to do something creative.

I think it will be pretty close to the book given the provenance that has gone before.
