Taylor, Thomas: Malamander (2019)

I thought The Swifts was wacky, but that leaves me searching for another word. This book is definitely... wack-filled?
"Magical realism" is the order of the day, and it is a classic children's fantasy in that the slightest attempt to make it rational is as doomed as the villain.
There is a slight Lemony Snicket vibe but without the condescension and with a lot more happiness. Recommended for middle-grade kids who can handle a little creepiness and a lot of weirdness. I enjoyed seeing all the ocean-related names, but I was really expecting the psychic sea-monkey to come back to life.
Still, there's hope: there are sequels in the Legends of Eerie-on-Sea:
Gargantis (2020)
Shadowghast (2021)
