Brenda Leigh Johnson will soon close her final case: The upcoming seventh season of The Closer will be the show's last, TNT announced Friday.

The decision was made by the show's star, Kyra Sedgwick, who won an Emmy for her role earlier this year.

"I cannot fathom how difficult it will be to say goodbye to the incredible family we've created on The Closer," Sedgwick said in a statement. "I will always be grateful to James Duff for his love and friendship, as well as for creating such a rich and complex character who I have loved living with year after year."

The series became a brand-redefining breakout hit for TNT after its debut in 2005. It currently ranks as the top basic cable series of all time. The final season will consist of 15 episodes, including the show's 100th episode. Production is scheduled to begin in spring 2011.

"It's impossible to fully express our appreciation to Kyra Sedgwick, series creator James Duff and all of the other talented people who brought The Closer to TNT viewers," Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, said in a statement. "The Closer was a pivotal series in setting a new course for TNT's original programming, while also serving as a prime example of the storytelling strength possible on cable television."

The final episodes of Season 6 are currently airing Mondays at 9/8c on TNT. The final season will air in 2011.

7 seasons is good for a US show, but I do like it.

I'm a bit surprised she's stopped though, since Kyra and Kevin lost a ton of money in Whatsisname's pyramid scheme, apparently, and were looking for all the work they could get.

NCIS is brilliant. New series (to us Freeview only) viewers just started on Five last week.
