Capital letters/characters are always UPPER case - everything else is lower case.

Strictly a capital character is the upper case letter most generally used at the start of a sentence.

Upper case characters used for given names and some nouns are initial capitals as in they are used as initials - so Terry David John Pratchett's initials are T.D.J.P

and Golems Talk Like This - are initial capitals

Does anyone know why it is the the first sentence in a paragraph of each chatper in sone books is in upper case? I'm not Talking Discworld here, but it's quite common.

Take the Kathy Reichs book I'm reading at the moment. Chapter one starts like this:

Kathy Reichs said:
I WASN'T THINKING ABOUT THE MAN WHO'D BLOWN HIMSELF UP.
The next sentence is in normal print with a capital at the start and lower case after. o_O

I guess it's for impact. Eeeek! A man blew himself up!!!

Sometimes it's just the first word, with monks from oldeny times it was the fist letter on the page. Gave them something to do I suppose.
