I've been thinking of introducing my young nieces and nephews to Terry for a while, but I've not been sure which book to give them. (I was tossing up between Equal Rites and Mort, which are equally good in my not-so-humble, but might drive them away).

My niece is now 14 and into fantasy, so Nation may be a good pick. I think she's old enough for it. :)

My nephews are both 8 each, so maybe ... The Wee Free Men? I thought about it, but my sisters and brothers-in-law told me not to, because they said "the kids are too messy, and I'd get the book back in terrible condition". (Considering that my later copies are hardbound first editions ... and I also have a rare, expensive, illustrated folio edition of Mort ... egh).

I would trust my niece with my hardcover Nation. If she keeps it safe and returns it in one piece, I'll give her any book she likes. But maybe with an 8-year-old running about, I should be cautious? *shrug* I don't know.

Hmm, good call. TWFM has a powerful climax, the elven "realm" is genuinely creepy, and the Feegles lend lots of much-needed comedy relief. :)

My particular 14-year-old also loves the "Daughter of Sherlock Holmes" movie, so she may respond well to a female heroine. Thanks, Tony!

Is 8 years old too young for Discworld? (I know, you can never be too young etc... but...) ;)

Can't you pick a cheap paperback from maybe a charity shop or similar?
