It's the Shakespeare Limerick Game!

Heh. ;) It's simply a little game (and challenge) that I invented for myself, so I figured "Why not share it?" ;)

The rules are simple: pick a Shakespeare play that you know well, and try to summarise it in a 5-line limerick. :) For instance:

Though Shakespeare's the name on the bill,
Some believe that the play's not by Will -
but by Bacon or Marlowe,
De Vere or De Carlo,
or one with a stranger name still.

Ready? And..... go! :-D

When Hamlet of Denmark was prince,
Ophelia went for a rinse.
The leaders were wary
For Hamlet was scary -
He made sev'ral characters mince.

Yikes! What happened to this board? :- It looks like those "" characters are back again. Ack.

Also, =Tamar... I like the limerick! :) But what do you mean by "mince"? Do you mean that Hamlet made several characters into mincemeat, or do you mean the verb "mince" (i.e. walk with short quick steps in an affectedly dainty manner - just think of Mr Humphries from "Are You Being Served"?) ;)

There was an old monarch named Lear
Whose story is tragic and drear;
One by one, the whole cast
pop their clogs, 'til at last
He, too, perishes. Silly old dear!

Both meanings of "mince" can work, but I think mincemeat was more on my mind at the time.

Both elven and human folk played
At the midsummer game of 'get laid'
With a bumper of hops
Young Bottom was tops
In a busy but dreamlike charade.

LOL...! I haven't seen "A Midsummer Night's Dream", but the limerick is clear enough. Creative juices are flowing! :)

Othello, a Moor, was from Venice;
He probably never played tennis.
But Iago will rue -
Desdemona will too -
that they know him, for he is a menace.

Lord MacBeth had a wife with ambition
To install him as king was her mission
But the blood on her hands
And the clashes of clans
Made them both regret their bad decision

Two teenagers were in Verona,
and their dads could make peace, but don't wanna.
In despair, they elope
and then - bereft of hope -
commit suicide. Each one's a goner!

Dedicated to Trump's proposed upcoming visit to London...

There once was a mayor of Lunnon
who was known for his darin' and cunnin'.
He told Trump "Go away,
We don't want you to stay;
Your stupidity simply is stunnin'."

Re: It's the Shakespeare Limerick Game!

Well, if you're gonna expand the topic to current events, I'm gonna expand it to other plays since we'll run out of Shakespeare pretty soon.

A Theban King, Oedipus Rex
With his mom had incestuous sex
He killed his old man
Though that wasn't his plan
When the gods on his head laid a hex

Re: It's the Shakespeare Limerick Game!

Sorry, but the Shakespeare thing simply wasn't attracting any more replies! ;) Nice one about Oedpius Rex.

A story of love and betrayal;
For Malvolio, a living hell.
But lost kin reunite,
rescued from their sad plight -
and the ending? It (mostly) ends well.

Mixa--

Feel free to write one in Catalan--I'd love to see even if I couldn't understand it. :)

Absolutely! :)

This tyrant is terribly cocky,
and his government's so very rocky.
His politics dirty,
his wounds 'three and thirty';
though fictionalised, it's still a shock(y).

(Julius Caesar)

(And yes, I cheated a bit...) ;)
