otaku is japanese for geek, so it's used outside japan to refer to manga and anime fans

I've never heard of weeaboo and I live in Japan! Is it Japanese?

As far as I know, "Otaku" refers to sad men who live with their parents, have never had a girlfriend, don't know how to communicate with the opposite sex, wear anoraks, are into gaming and manga, who go to maid cafes in Akihabara and leer at scantily clad cutey girls to get their kicks. I wouldn't say the word "otaku" was complimentary in the slightest.

Maybe outside of Japan it has another meaning.
