The short stories in this collection were published between 2007 and 2020.
Sir Hereward is the son of a member of a group,of powerful witches who usually only allow daughters to live. His companion, a sorcerous puppet named Fitz, is quite old and its papier-mache is magically protected. Their job - probably the reason Sir Hereward was born - is to destroy emanations from a different plane which tend to take over a location as godlets, eventually eating all the life in an area and growing too strong to handle easily. Not all do so, but there is a list of the known bad ones. The ritual to destroy them requires saying their real name and a long invocation, and then a dangerous use of sorcerous implements, which are used up and must be replenished. Sir Hereward, age 25, doesn't have much time to relax.

The first few stories are kind of grim. Later in the book there are some funny moments, which helped make it a pleasanter experience.

The cover art is beautiful at first glance, but also captures the eerie nature of Fitz.
