A plan like that would probably also be meant to off the baby as well, but Nanny managed to save the prince (and the queen for a little while). More reason for the Felmets to dislike witches. And Nanny mentioned none of it... out of shame of failure, maybe?
Has potential. The Felmets then maybe planned to say that the King died from his grief. But that horrible witch gave him a son to live for, and the kingdom lost a queen but gained a prince, so the national mourning wasn't at the level the Felmets had planned on.
I'm not so sure that's what happened, given that we never see anyone grieving for either the king or the queen in WS. People are scared, that's one thing. But they're not grieving.

Lancre folk are mostly farmers and herders, plus a few tradesmen for things they can't do at home. Farmers and herdsmen know about the dangers of childbirth. Their attitude toward rulers is that the king does the kinging and they do the farming. They may have been fond of the late queen, or not, we don't know. But it's at a distance. They have more personal things to worry about, such as, is the new guy going to let them get out of the house before he burns it. The witches have their roles as healers and advisers of each of their agreed patches of the kingdom. Nanny in particular is a skilled midwife but sometimes nothing can be done. Also, this is fairly early in Nanny's career. She's not the top midwife she becomes later on. Magrat is trained but also very early in her career as a research witch. Some things can't be fixed by Grsnny's headology and aqua. Once the prince is handed over to the wetnurse, their job is done. The murder of Verence I and the escape of the loyal guardsman with the baby brought the new situation to Granny.
