The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers (series 2014-2021). Also the other three books in the series, which won the Hugo award for Best Series. The books are in the same universe and linked but can be read separately. Distinctive aliens and cultures. Humans are not impressive but are slowly working to gain respect. Humans have distinctive cultures as well. Excellent.

I have read this one (just the one though), and I agree with your assessment that it's got distinctive aliens and cultures... but perhaps it was just the way it was recommended to me, but I was expecting it to be funny... and it's not. It's not grim sci-fi, for sure, but it is still serious sci-fi, not humourous (which was what I was asking for when it was recommended to me). So yeah, it was good, but not good enough for me to actively seek out the others in the series.

But I guess, if you like scifi with very good worldbuilding, it's probably worth a shot. Just don't expect jokes like I did.
