I did like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Harry Potter films didn't do a bad job (although not as good as the books). The DW adaptations are a bit hit-and-miss.

The Discworld apaptations were my first experience of Terry's literature (The Hogfather and Going Postal). The Hogfather was rather boring in comparison to Going Postal, which was rather boring in comparison to every DW book I have read.

As for the HP films, they were fun and actionable. The Goblet of fire book was much better than the film, along with the final book (That scene of Ron's hallucinations from the Horcrux will change my views of the kids forever, I'm pretty sure it wasnt described so M-rated in the book).

Also, they didn't get to the point where we found out Tonks was pregnant. Why not? They changed the location of the RZ point in the beginning from her house to the Burrow? And cut out the scene Lupin appears in Number 13 to EXPLAIN this to them.

At the mo I'm reading Notwithstanding by Louis de Bernieres, and it's absolutely lovely I'd go so far as to say delightful. But it's a collection of his short magazine publications, and I think it would be better read slowly, one story at a time. A girl can get too much loveliness And now I can forgive him for Captain Corelli's Mandalin.

Got the sixth when it was released but decided to refresh my self first.

Reading that one now. Don't want to put you off reading all 5 again, but I don't think I'm going to bother finishing it.

Started on Andrea Levy's Long Song, for reading group. It will probably be OK, but it's another novel about slavery - last year we read four or five, and I'm about done with it.

Tony, going to start The Last Kingdom, as you suggested, by Bernard Cornwell. A bargain really, s/b 6.99 but I got it off the book stall in Pocklington for 3.50!

I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The main character, Uhtred is a little obnoxious in this one, but that's because he's still a kid. I think you'll get to really like him as the series progesses.
