Well, Tony? While I do agree there were many more dud stories towards the end, there were plenty in the beginning, and of course, you could play the 'Terry Nation Drinking Game' for the episodes written by him...if you didn't mind dying of liver failure, anyway. Then again, although credited to Nation, I heard Chris Boucher rewrote a few episodes of the first season heavily.
Also, for those who haven't watched it, the first two series are out on Blu-Ray, they're worth watching, and all the episodes have new effects, and frankly, they really add something to the series. I flicked through a few parts of episodes I loved, and the new FX do add quite a bit of polish. I particularly loved the new effect on a certain character's death in
Star One, which looks less like he's sliding down a waterslide into a superimposed arc generator.

Space Fall, where they manage to integrate the original footage of Raiker being sucked out into space with the CGI models. And in
Cygnus Alpha, they got rid of the crude exploding doll that was meant to be Brian Blessed exploding in space, even if it's not in this footage AFAIK...
As for the reboot...well, I want to wait until more details come out before I pass judgement...but there has already been an audio drama reboot. I haven't listened to it yet, having purchased it through Big Finish until they seemed to have lost the rights to sell it, but it's a grittier reimagining with the likes of Derek Riddell and Colin Salmon in the cast.
