I don't know how well known Farley Mowet is around the world, but he's quite legendary here in Canada. It's almost impossible not to know his books, movies, poems and his work as an environmentalist.
I first read Farley Mowatt as a small child (Owls In The Family), and read People Of The Deer at the age of 11. He was a masterful writer and storyteller, and not just on environmental issues. I strongly recommend The Gray Seas Under.
Colin Pillinger has died aged 70. He was a planetary scientist responsible for the Beagle 2 expedition to Mars (that unfortunately failed). Great loss.
I've had correspondence with him before, and he was a very patient, kind and tolerant person. And he was doubtless a hard worker. He was too young to die.
