I sort of prefer that in my horror films (like the shower seen in Psycho). With many of these 'slasher' films there seems to be a competition between film makers to find the most bizarre ways of killing people and throwing in loads of blood and gore which, in my opinion, desensitizes oneself to this whole genre. (I was bored of them after Friday 13th part 3.)

One of the scariest films that I saw was "The Changeling" with Edward Woodward (not the Angelina Jolie one) which relied totally on atmosphere and story rather than violence; and for sheer uncomfortable and scary viewing, "The Exorcist".
