I think the expression has more to do with actors' troupes, where a good trouper will play any role required as well as working behind the scenes. "What a trouper!"

In that case, I was being a trouper today. (I perform with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic, and today was concert day. I got there a little early, helped them unload things from the truck (e.g. music stands and harpsichord), stayed all day and did the concert, and then stayed back to help them reload things back to the truck (music stands and two timpani).

I got home about 10pm, and I'm beat. But that's the price you pay for performing music with professionals).
