I tire of Hollywood and seek the oddballs.

Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont.
Joan Plowright is delightful and warm; Rupert Whozit is delightfully hot.

Into the Wild.
True story. I have always wanted to run away from home. This convinced to take a map.

Dead Man.
Johnny Depp is a nerdy accountant heading to the Wild West.
Watch him become a killer.

Feeling Minnesota.
Love him or hate him, Keanu Reeves is good. Or bad...

Tea with Mussolini.
Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, Lily Tomlin and Cher.
Varied cast, fabulous movie.

Arlington Road.
Psycho thriller. Watch Jeff Bridges doubt his sanity.

And...
The Thin Man series with Myrna Loy and William Powell.
Yes, these are Classic movies, not independant productions.
That's not enough of a reason to not enjoy them all.

Next?

Anything by Lars von Trier. Dancer in the Dark starring Bjork is an incredible movie.

Whale Rider a NZ movie is very good.

I love French and Italian movies - 8 Women and Amelie are two that spring to mind.

I have Amelie, on video, Tony, lovely film.

I also love Barbarella, but I think that was made in Hollywood?

Ladies In Lavendar & Calendar Girls, were good as well.

Love, Honour & Obey isn't a great film, but it's not as bad as the critics may have suggested. Ray Winstone is great - met him a coupla times and he seems a nice fella as well.

I really enjoy a lot of Spanish & Japanese films, like anything directed by Guillermo Del Toro (except Hellboy). The Devil's Backbone is particularly good. The Happiness of the Katakuris (dir. Takashi Miike) is hilarious!

And who that's watched Amelie doesn't think its lovely?

Maggie Smith - my favourite actress by a long way. She's brilliant in everything she's in.

I forgot LinL and Calendar Girls! Love them both.

Yes, Barbarella was Hollywood, '66. Jane Fonda made me want high-top boots and a gun.
I'm glad to see someone else likes Barbarella. I wanted Pygar, what a lovely Angel.

Another one I love is Local Hero.

We've been getting our Shakespeare on.
I'm a nerd, bite me.

So I got my daughter to watch Orson Welles's Othello, the best to my mind.
Not the full play, but scary-weird. Iago in the cage is unforgettable.
She liked it enough to watch the whole thing on youtube.

Henry V with Kenny B. Now, his Hal is just downright cute, but his delivery of "The Speech" is without parallel.
Unless, Derek Jacobi played Henry Five at some point.

Hamlet. Oi. Why are there so many and why does every actor try to behave like --at least look like-- Olivier?
Ok, not Derek, never Derek.

Perish the thought of but Mel Gibson as Hamet but his "words words words" speech is probably the best rendition.
He is truly deranged. But we only found that out, later.

Derek Jacobi as Richard II, BBC production. I love this film.
First watched it to 'help' me with the tempo and meter (school, what else), but it's wonderful. Richard was such a putz. He almost manages to get a grasp of humanity at the (his) end, but reverts to form, ends up whacked on the head and dead.
